Family and Interests

Bill has been married to his wife, Kimaree Gray (formerly Kim Hicks), for over 14 years. Kim is a lifetime resident of Ventura where she attended Ventura High School and the University of Southern California (USC). Kim's Father, Bill Hicks played basketball for UCLA under the direction of Coach John Wooden. He was lucky enough to play in Wooden's first NCAA final four. For the sake of family unity it should be noted that Kim's mother, Pamela Hicks (Pam), attended USC. Kim and Bill have three children, Mason, Tyler, and Malia.

Bill loves coaching Soccer and Baseball. He is an avid surfer (and anything else in the ocean), basketball and paddle tennis player. He cannot imagine not living within sight of the Pacific Ocean. He lives on the Ventura Hillside (Hobson Heights), so that he can look at the beautiful Channel Islands and ocean views every day.

The Hawaiian Connection a Strange and Windy Road

Bill Gray was originally born William Watson on August 25th, 1961 in Honolulu Hawaii. Ralph (Buddy) Watson, his biological father, was orphaned after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Buddy’s father, Raphael Watson, was a PBY Pilot and was killed by the Japanese while defending his aircraft at Kaneohe Naval Air Station. Bill was named partly for an uncle (Billy Weaver), who was killed in a freak Tiger shark attack off the Mokulua Islands, Lanikai, Oahu in 1959.

Clifton Stokes Weaver (Cliff), Bill’s Grandfather on his mothers side (Father of Billy weaver), was a Partner in the largest Restaurant chain in Hawaii during the 40’s and 50’s, Spence Cliff Corporation. Their holdings included the Pioneer Inn and Lahaina Broiler on Maui, Hotel Tahiti and Hotel Tahiti Village in French Polynesia, and numerous Restaurants on Oahu including Queen Surf, Cocos (now the location of the Hard Rock Café in Waikiki), Tiki Tops, Fisherman’s Warf, and the Tahitian Lanai.

Bill’s Mother, Katherine (Kathy), grew up in Luxury on the East Coast after her parents divorced. Her mother, Kay Sutton (Stage Name), was an actress during the 30’s and 40’s. For years Kathy lived in a Park Avenue Penthouse in the presence of such greats as Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe. Her Step father, Dan Topping, and his partner, Del Webb, owned the New York Yankees.

With such divergent backgrounds, Buddy and Kathy’s marriage had little chance of success. After her divorce from Buddy, Kathy married James Scott Gray (Jim). Jim’s Great Grand Father came to the islands in 1876 from Australia to work for King Kalakaua. As his City Planner and Architect, he built the Original Royal Palace, now called the Legislature Building (behind King Kamehameha's Statue), the Bishop Museum, the Kawaiahao Church, and many other Historical Sites.

Jim eventually adopted and raised Bill and Ralph. He paid for their education at the best private school in the State of Hawaii, Punahou, and Bill’s college education at Oregon State University. Bill credits Jim for teaching him what responsibility really means.

Bill had no contact with his biological father, Buddy, until he was 18. During a summer break from College, Bill decided to try out competitive canoe paddling. During a training session, one of Bill’s close friends asked if Bill would like to meet his Real Father. Apparently Buddy was a lifetime member and coach for Lanikai Canoe Club. Buddy shared his knowledge of the oceans, scuba diving, and his family history. A relationship developed and continues to this day. On one of Bill’s first spear fishing dives with Buddy behind the Mokulua Islands, the group was surrounded by a group of aggressive white tip sharks. It was Buddy’s experience and calm presence that helped Bill overcome his inherited fear of sharks.

Bill’s extended family includes French speaking Tahitian Cousins and relatives of King Kamehameha (the Hawaiian Royal Family). Each branch of the family has incredible stories and history. He has been told by friends that he should write a book, but he would rather share his stories with you in person.
